My Tribute to Cecil the Lion

I feel called to write about the recent killing of Cecil the lion from Zimbabwe. This story has spread like wildfire and people are outraged. I agree, this is a terrible tragedy. This beautiful, strong animal was killed for sport. But still, I believe there is more to this story than we are seeing. Whenever an impact this large is made on humanity I feel there is a bigger picture. Let’s take a broader perspective for a minute. What if on a higher plane of reality this animal sacrificed its life so that we could open our hearts and our minds even more? What if his death was meant to teach us about compassion, love and respect? What if his life could help us begin to put an end to the brutality and violence we all contribute to? People are devastated and taking a stand so this does not happen again. There is a level of compassion and humanity taking place that does not happen every day. What if on a much larger and broader scale he gave his life to show us our savage ways need to change? There is an opening of hearts occurring because we can feel the power and love and soul through his lion eyes in each photograph. People are demanding justice because this was an endangered species. Why I wonder, do we not feel this way about the cows, chickens, fish and humans we kill by the thousands every day? Is it because they are not endangered? Is this what we are waiting for in order to feel some sort of remorse?  To me, Cecils impression feels like sacred beings who have walked this Earth like Mother Teresa, Buddha or Christ. There is something very special we all feel within this “king of beasts”. Just because the cows, chickens, fish and people we kill do not fall within the same importance on our scale, we wash our hands and look the other way. Why are our hearts not breaking for all of the selfish murders that are committed each day in this world? Why are we so numb to what we are doing to all living creatures on this planet? I personally thank this courageous lion for showing up to create one of the biggest waves of compassion I have seen across continents. My heart goes out in gratitude for his sacrifice to bring more love, life and the humanity to our planet. Thank you Cecil for opening the hearts of thousands and I can only hope that this wave continues to grow and expand so we can all live in a peaceful world again<3.
